In the Heart of the Sea is a 2015 American biographical adventure thriller film based on Nathaniel Philbrick's 2000 non-fiction book of the same name about the sinking of the American whaling ship Essex in 1820, an event that inspired the tale of Moby-Dick. Directed by Ron Howard, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Ben Whishaw, and Brendan Gleeson. It was released in the United States on December 11, 2015.
Plot
In 1850, innkeeper Thomas Nickerson receives a visit from author Herman Melville, who offers him money in return for an account of the Essex, of which Nickerson is the last living survivor. Nickerson initially refuses but relents after his wife intervenes.
Nearly 30 years earlier, in 1820, veteran whaler Owen Chase is hired as first officer aboard the recently refitted Essex. He is pleased to find that the second officer is his old friend Matthew Joy. The ship's captain is George Pollard, Jr, an inexperienced mariner from an established whaling family.
